5MeO-DMT is the acronym for 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine, which occurs naturally in the human brain, as well as in other species of the animal and plant kingdoms. As the name implies, it’s also part of the tryptamine family, which are monoamine alkaloids that conform to the so-called substituted tryptamines, or serotonin analogues, such as neurotransmitters and hormones.
Some of the most noted members of the tryptamine family are the DMT (dimethyltryptamine) found in the Amazonian ayahuasca brew, and the psilocybin found in some species of “magic” mushrooms. In the last two decades, 5-MeO-DMT has become increasingly known in scientific, shamanic and alternative medicine circles, due to its outstanding entheogenic and therapeutical properties. In fact, studies from renowned universities[1] worldwide have shown that the consumption of this compound, whether from a natural or synthetic source, can have positive long-lasting results in the treatment of psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and even drug and alcohol addictions.
As mentioned before, 5-MeO-DMT occurs naturally in our brain, in very low quantities and during specific moments of our lives, such as birth, death, some stages of sleep, and during near-death experiences. That is why, when taken in a higher dose, it instantly crosses the human blood-brain barrier and causes an intense experience of altered consciousness. And that is also why it’s not an addictive substance. Actually, a scientific report from 2017[2] shows that after treatments with 5-MeO-DMT there was an important downregulation of the mGluR5 receptors, which play an important part in the rewarding effects for drugs of abuse.

The God Molecule
Unlike other ‘journeys’ with compounds of the tryptamine family, this one has a very short length of no more than 10 to 30 minutes. During that time, most participants claim to have experienced deep awakenings and ego-dissolution and gained a broad understanding about the meaning of life, the purpose of the soul, and the divine. In fact, it’s common to hear the participants state that they could feel one with God, with the source of life or with all that is. That is why, 5-MeO-DMT is currently known as the God molecule, in a sense surpassing its cousin, the DMT, also known as the Spiritual molecule.
The term entheogen comes from the Greek words entheos (full of the god, inspired, possessed) and genésthai (to come into being). 5-MeO-DMT, found naturally and in great quantities in the Incilius alvarius toad, is seen as the most powerful substance that can induce such effects. Scientists seem pretty amazed by what they’ve experienced after their sessions, and many participants have re-discovered a peaceful and solid connection with their own spirituality after just one session.
However, it’s important to state that the substance itself it’s not enough to induce these “miraculous” effects. Many others have claimed to have had terrible experiences under the effects of 5-MeO-DMT or even days and weeks after it. That is why it’s fundamental to start the process with people who have the right training to guide you through the whole experience, which starts with proper preparation and ends with full integration.
