Don't trip alone!

5-MeO-DMT is by far the strongest Entheogen known to man. It is important to know that consuming this compound by yourself can be extremely dangerous. Firstly, it is known that during the experience people can stop breathing without noticing it. And secondly, if vomiting takes place, you must be rolled over on your left side, to prevent choking while laying on your back. It is, therefore, fundamental to have someone watching over you.

Origins of the Sonoran Desert Toad

The Incilius alvarius, better known as Bufo alvarius, is the largest native toad species of the US and is endemic from the Sonoran Desert. This arid, biodiverse, and fascinating ecosystem has an extension of 100,000 sq mi (260,000 sq km), and it’s located between the US and Mexico. Hot as any other desert, its wildlife enjoys some good months of rain and thunderstorms during the summer monsoons, between July and August. It’s during those months, and even some weeks earlier, when the Sonoran Desert toad rises from the underground carrying what for some is a deadly poison, and for others a divine medicine — bufotenin and 5-MeO-DMT, the most powerful psychedelics known to man.

This mystical desert is not only home for over 600 mammal species (including the majestic jaguar), 350 bird species, 20 amphibian species, over 100 reptile species, 30 native fish species, over 1000 native bee species, and more than 2,000 native plant species, but also at least 17 native American tribes. If their ancestors knew or not about the incredible properties of the Incilius alvarius venom is still unknown, although there’s no ritualistic tradition alive around it. And that lack of ancestral background has turn into a decisive point in the popularization of the substance.

Cultural Tradition

The presence of toads in mythology and ancestral iconography of important ancient civilizations as the Mayans, Aztecs or Olmecs, is for some a prove that the Incilius alvarius venom was known and used in ritualistic contexts. However, toads and frogs have been a fundamental part of mythology and sacred iconography in so many ancient cultures around the world, that this assumption seems more like a wish than solid proof. What it’s true though, is that some groups of the Seri people have been incorporating this practice to their ancient traditions and using the “toad medicine” in a ritualistic context.

The Seri People

The Seri people, also known as Comcaac, have settled on the Mexican side of the Sonoran Desert, around the Gulf of California, for hundreds of years. They used to be nomads and were not colonized as most Native American tribes, which is why there’s no Christian influence in their religious traditions that are not very complex but quite intertwined with their connection with nature. By the 1950s, there were only 215 members of the Seri people alive as the Mexican state and the ranchers who settled in their land almost annihilated them. However, they managed to survive and by 2015 almost 800 people were conforming to the Seri people. By right and descendants, they are one of the tribes who can be considered natural guardians of the Sonoran Desert toad. And so far, they’re the only tribe who has become actively involved in the use, distribution, and protection of the animal.

As in any psychedelic circle, mostly when the substance is so easily purchased and administered, the Bufo alvarius scene it’s starting to be permeated by gossips, disputes, aggressions, and a lot of ego-driven options. We all have different reasons for wanting to try 5-MeO-DMT and no one can say that one is more valid than the other. What’s important is to know that, if you choose for trying the Incilius alvarius venom, you know where it comes from and the context around it.
